How to Create Clipping Path using a Pen Tool

What Is A Clipping Path?

It is an image editing technique used with Pen Tool in Photoshop to remove the background from an image. Clipping path is generally used when the subject of the image has sharp, smooth edges. This allows the clipping path to stay straight.

Adobe Photoshop makes it possible to cut out an image, without permanently changing the layer. Once the path is created, the clipping path is then applied on it so that anything outside the path will be omitted when you place the file into any web developing software.

Why is it necessary to use a clipping path?

Clipping Path is necessary when we use any images to be prepared for a design; such as brochure design, magazine design, web design, and leaflet. Clipping path is a useful image-editing technique that can help you isolate a subject from a background.

How do you create a clipping path and remove background with Photoshop?

  1. First, launch Photoshop and load the image you would like to edit. You can zoom in the image using the zoom image tool as much as you need, for a better editing experience. Once you have got the file open in Photoshop; select the Pen Tool from the tool, check the rubber band box and create a new path layer.
  2. Now, start moving the pen tool to create a clipping path in your image chosen. If the path doesn’t meet any edge in the image you are editing, to meet the edge select ‘Add Anchor Point Tool’ under Pen Tool in the menu to create a new anchor point anchor in the existing path.
  3. When crossing the angles, select ‘Convert Point Tool’ to adjust the path shape. Note that there will be some uneven portion on the image you are editing hence you cannot move the pen tool into straight direction; make a path in a base of zigzag to make the editing perfect.
  4. Check the whole clipping path to find out if there is any loop in the image. Make a quick selection to find out any loop or edges. To select path, press ‘ctrl-enter’ after ‘click on path layer’. Deselect the path, command ‘D’ for Macintosh and ‘Ctrl D’ for Windows. Clip out the loops where the background is visible. To move the image, select ‘Hand Tool’ or press the spacebar. Zoom in the image, select the path layer and make a selection to a quick mask to check the path. Find out any other colors fur multiple clipping paths.
  5. Copy the path layer you just created. Name the path layer as a color you want to clip out. Now begin to create clipping paths for individual color.
  6. Make a quick selection to view what you have done. Copy the multiple color path layers if you need multiple paths on colors so you have to delete the other paths.
  7. Press ‘ctrl’ on Windows command to select the path which is needed to be deleted. Make a quick selection and you would see the colors you removed are being separated.
  8. To change the background color, make invert selection ‘ctrl shift I’ for windows. Select the new adjustment layer and choose a background color.

You can change the layer name and save the file wherever you want, and you are good to go.

Tips when creating a clipping path

  • Do it manually by hand

When it comes to producing high-quality Photoshop clipping paths, the truth is there is no quick and easy way to achieve a good cutout – you just have to do it properly with your hands.

  • Soften cutout edges when using Photoshop

Open the Paths Palette and while holding down the Command key click the path you have saved. This will create a selection of your path- allowing you to have an option on how to edit your work. Save the file as a Photoshop EPS file, remembering to also save the working Photoshop PSD file so you can come back to it if alterations are needed.

  • Do not use the magic wand tool

If anyone ever tells you that the Magic Wand Tool is the thing to use when creating a clipping path in Photoshop, please don’t listen. Just walk away. It’s a great shortcut, but like most quick fixes, the results are often terrible, and it takes twice as long to fix it as it does to do it properly.

The Magic Wand Tool selects large areas of similarly colored pixels and creates a selection area. If you SHIFT-CLICK on another area of color, it will add the selection to the existing area.
