Amazon Product Image Guidelines
To succeed on Amazon, your images must be more than just pretty—they need to be compliant and conversion-oriented. Amazon’s algorithm prioritizes listings that follow their strict technical and aesthetic standards.
1. Technical Requirements
These are the non-negotiables. If your images don’t meet these specs, Amazon may suppress your listing.
- File Formats: JPEG (
.jpgor.jpeg) is preferred, though TIFF, PNG, or GIF (non-animated) are accepted. - Color Mode: RGB or CMYK (RGB is best for web viewing).
- Resolution: Minimum 1600 pixels on the longest side to enable the hover-to-zoom feature.
- Image Frame: The product must occupy at least 85% of the image area.
- File Names: Must include the product identifier (Amazon ASIN, JAN, EAN, or UPC) followed by a period and the file extension (e.g.,
B000123456.jpg).
2. The Main Image (Hero Shot)
The Main Image is your “handshake” with the customer. It has the strictest rules:
- Background: Must be pure, surgical white (RGB 255, 255, 255).
- Content: The image must be a professional photograph of the actual product being sold.
- Prohibitions: No text, logos, watermarks, inset images, or “action” shots.
- Props: No distracting accessories or items that are not included with the purchase.
- Quality: The entire product must be in focus and free of jagged edges (aliasing).
3. Secondary Images & Infographics
Once a customer clicks, these images do the selling. You have up to 8 additional slots (though 6-7 is the sweet spot).
| Image Type | Purpose | Best Practice |
| Infographics | Highlight Features | Use callouts to point out materials, dimensions, or unique tech. |
| Lifestyle | Show Context | Show the product being used by a person in a realistic setting. |
| Dimensions | Prevent Returns | Use arrows and measurements to show the actual scale of the item. |
| Comparison | Establish Value | Compare your product against “generic” versions to show superiority. |
| Instructional | Ease of Use | A “How-to” or “What’s in the box” image builds buyer confidence. |
4. Best Practices for Conversion
- Consistency: Maintain a similar lighting style and color palette across all images for a cohesive brand feel.
- Mobile First: Check your images on a smartphone. Text in infographics must be large enough to read on small screens.
- Shadows: Use subtle “drop shadows” or “reflection shadows” to give the product depth so it doesn’t look like it’s floating in space.
- Color Accuracy: Use professional color grading so the product the customer receives matches exactly what they saw online.
Pro Tip: Use all available image slots. A listing with 7 high-quality images (including a video) consistently outperforms listings with only 2 or 3 photos.
