What is White Balance

White balance is used to adjust colors to match the colors of the light source so that white objects appear white.  Subjects may be lit by a number of different light sources, including sunlight, incandescent bulbs, and fluorescent lighting. What is white balance in photography? White balance refers to the process of removing or neutralizing color casts in your images.  You see, most light sources produce a color cast.

Color Temperature

Color temperature is a measurement of the warmth or coolness of light. The temperature of the light affects all colours in the scene. You can adjust the color temperature in your camera or during post-processing.

In Camera White Balance

Most cameras come with the option to manually set or adjust white balance. Typical settings include “sun”, “shade”, “tungsten” and “fluorescent”. Some cameras come with the option to manually set a color temperature by choosing a specific Kelvin value.

In simpler language, white balance in digital photography means adjusting colors so that the image looks more natural. We go through the process of adjusting colors to primarily get rid of color casts, in order to try to resemble the colors in our images with reality.
