Portrait photographers prefer wider apertures like f/2.8 or even f/4 — they can focus on the subject and blur the background. That’s also why landscape photographers typically shoot in the f/11 to f/22 range — they want more of the landscape in focus, from the foreground to the distant horizon.

How to Choose Aperture

Aperture is denoted by a number, such as f/1.4 or f/8. The smaller the number, the wider the aperture. The larger the number, the smaller the aperture. If you’re shooting in a low light environment, it’s wise to shoot with a wide aperture to ensure we get a good exposure.

Aperture for Landscape Photography

So in landscape photography, you’ll typically want to use a higher f stop, or narrow aperture, to get more of your scene in focus. Generally, you’ll want to shoot in the f/8 to f/11 range, topping out at around f/16.
